On April 3, Prof. Hermann Partzinger, the president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation held the public lecture: “Museum Island and Humboldt Forum: The current challenge of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation between science and the public”. The event was organized by the Academia Europaea Tbilisi Knowledge Hub and the Goethe-Institute Georgien.
The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, largest institution of Germany and whole Europe in the field of culture, unites States Museums of Berlin, Libraries and State Archives of Prussia. Its collections consist of practically all types of cultural heritage: Art and material culture, literature, documentation and musical archives.
Prof. Hermann Partzinger, renowned scientist who fruitfully works in the direction of archaeology and cultural heritage management, was appointed as the President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in 2008. Under his leadership various reforms were implemented in the Institution, including the full rebranding, aiming transformation of the Prussian Cultural Heritage foundation to the modern standards.
In 2014 during the interview given to the corporate magazine of the Georgian National Museum Prof. Partzinger noted: “Public engagement has many different facets. First of all, museums have to aim their programs at people within different parts of society, for example different ages, different interests and education, as well as cultural or religious backgrounds – museums must engage them all.” Ten years later from this interview professionals of the cultural field in Georgia had a chance to discuss the current challenges that are present between the modern society and science in the cultural institutions with him at the Goethe-Institute Georgien.
Prof. Hermann Partzinger’s friendship with Georgia counts several decades. First he visited Georgia when he was still very young following to recommendation of his professor, famous archaeologist himself, Prof. Georg Kossack. He came to Georgia to participate in the Vani International Symposium and since those times he collaborates with the Georgian scientists uninterruptedly.
The EU supported Twinning Project implemented between the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation’s State Museums of Berlin and the Georgian National Museum was led by Prof. Partzinger from the German side and by Prof. David Lordkipanidze from the Georgian side back in 2009-2012. The Twinning Project was followed by many different initiatives, where the partners of the institutions were the Goethe-Institute Georgien, German Embassy Tbilisi, German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Georgia, Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation and etc.
